History of the World Matchplay Tournament

Volvo World Match Play

The History of the Volvo World Match Play dates back to 1964 when the tournament was first held at Wentworth and it was the likes of Arnold Palmer and Gary Player who dominated those early years. Since then the honours list has read like a whose who of golf with greats like Jack, Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Nick Faldo on lifting the crown on several occasions.

In 2009 the tournament will see a huge revamp with the tournament moving away from Wentworth for the very first time in its history, it will be played at the brilliant Finca Cortesin course in Malaga Spain. It was though that the quality of field was waining due to the chance a player could be going home by Thursday lunchtime if they lost their first match. So the new tournament is a round robin format which sees the players each guaranteed at least three matches over Thursday and Friday which is hoped will attract the star names.

Accenture World Match Play

The Accenture World Match Play was first held in 1999 after the idea of the World Golf Championship had been developed. The idea behind The World Golf Championships was to bring together the various worldwide tours and enhance competition as well as the structure of professional golf. The International Federation of PGA Tours was formed in 1996 with six member Tours deciding to develop the World Golf Championships.

The World Match Play would bring together the top 64 ranked golf players from all over the world and become one of the top tournaments on the golf calendar. It is a tournament that has gone from strength to strength with fans as well as the players themselves. The Match Play format is always popular for spectators due to the nature of this type of competition as well as being easy to watch for the arm chair golf fan. With this in mind the Accenture World Match play has become a popular betting event for sports fans worldwide. The World Match Play betting odds are always very competitive and attract wide interest.

The Accenture World Match Play would traditionally become the first of the World Golf Championships to be played each season. The event has proved to be particularly successful with a certain Tiger Woods as he is a three time winner of the event which is the most in its ten year history. Indeed, he will be trying to add a fourth title to his trophy cabinet when this year's first round gets underway on the 17th February 2010.
