2006 World Matchplay Winner - Paul Casey

England's Paul Casey created a record-breaking chapter in the illustrious history of the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club when he produced the biggest victory in its previous 43 finals, defeating US golfer Shaun Micheel by a 10 and 8 margin over the West Course. Casey also collected another record, the least number of holes played in four rounds by a winner with 124 compared to the 128 by Ian Woosnam in 2001. Casey joined an elite group of debut winners of the including Ernie Els (1994), Greg Norman (1980), Bill Rogers (1979), Isao Aoki (1978), Hale Irwin (1974) and Tom Weiskopf (1972).

Casey took a golf scholarship at Arizona State University (one of an increasing number of young British golfers taking scholarships). In the U.S. he was the first man to win three consecutive Pac-10 Championships (1998, 1999 and 2000). In 2000 he broke the championship scoring record held by Tiger Woods (18 under par) with a 23 under par 265.
